Bitdefender Total Security is the best antivirus suite of 2026. It achieved 99.8% detection in tests carried out by independent laboratories, received AV-TEST's maximum scores in each of the three test categories in June 2026, and slowed down boot time by only 8 seconds – the lowest impact on the system of all the suites in that round of testing.
The cost is the easier part to dispute. For five devices, a one-year subscription begins at $24.99 for the first year. The two adults will pay less than what most comparable suites will cost you a month.
Two things to keep in mind before we dig in: The included VPN is limited to 200MB a day per device (not a complete VPN substitute); there's no password manager in Total Security. Both are real misses. Neither impacts the verdict for most users.

Ransomware Remediation

File-Level Backup Module: This file-level backup module allows files that have been encrypted by ransomware to be recovered by tracking file activity and rolling back any suspicious behavior in real time. File-level encryption used by ransomware is detected, the activity is stopped, and files are rolled back from a secure backup. This module complements real-time protection and doesn't replace it – the idea is to target everything that slips past the initial layer of protection and minimize the damage.

Safe Payment browser

Also, the Safe Pay feature of Bitdefender is a secure browser that starts whenever you visit online banking sites or payment pages. It prevents other apps from snatching information by not allowing any other apps to run once the safe payment browser starts. It also protects you by blocking keyloggers from seeing what you type and by not allowing any other app to monitor your clipboard.
It's also the only comprehensive antivirus package at this end of the market to come with a dedicated secure browser. The most practically useful thing that most reviews mentioned, as a sort of aside.

Webcam and microphone protection

Bitdefender monitors which apps are requesting access to your webcam and microphone, and lets you know whenever an app requests access. When an app requests access, you can decide to block or grant access – and you can make this decision right from your notification screen. No setup is required, and the app runs quietly in the background after installation, making it useful for remote workers, video conference participants, and laptop owners with built-in webcam covers.

Vulnerability scanner

It examines your entire collection of installed software and your Windows settings against a set of the most prevalent security vulnerabilities. It identifies outdated software and missing Windows patches, Wi-Fi security issues, and open ports that can be exploited. A report shows the findings of the scan and provides you with 1-click fixes for most of the issues; it should be run once after installation and also after installing updates.

Parental controls

The website filters are designed by categories; there are custom time schedules, app blocking, and location monitoring on iOS/Android for any mobile device. Everything is configured from the Bitdefender Central website dashboard – so if parents don't want to sit with the children's laptop or mobile to configure, they can do everything online. Website categories are adult, gambling, social media, and gaming, with toggle buttons on/off.

Anti-theft tools

Anti-theft: Available for Windows laptops and Android phones. File shredder: This tool checks for and removes useless files that file recovery utilities can't recover. That is the most useful system performance figure in any antivirus review — not scanning speed, but how much the software slows your PC during normal daily use. A four-second difference from the nearest competitor sounds small. Over dozens of reboots per month, and across slower or older hardware, it compounds into a real difference in daily experience.
Bitdefender Total Security can have a notable performance impact on some PCs. The disclaimer matters on older hardware — machines from 2016 or earlier with spinning hard drives and under 8GB of RAM will feel the impact more than a modern machine with an SSD. On hardware from 2019 onwards, most users will not notice any slowdown in daily use.

Bitdefender Total Security covers 3, 5, or 10 devices, with 1-year or 2-year billing periods. All plans include Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android - the device count is an overall number per household, regardless of platform.

What is not included

Two features are missing from Total Security that comparable packages offer at a similar or lower cost: a password manager and an unlimited VPN. These are the full versions of Bitdefender Password Manager and VPN. Full Bitdefender VPN (unlimited) can be added for an additional fee, or Bitdefender Premium Security can be upgraded to at a higher price.

Comparison with the competition

Norton 360 Deluxe for five devices at $49.99/year has a real unlimited VPN and password manager that Bitdefender Total Security does not offer. As you can see in the same test round above, Bitdefender's edge comes from its slightly better detection rate (99.8% vs Norton at 98.7%) and its lighter impact on system performance. If you are already buying a standalone password manager and a separate standalone VPN, then Bitdefender Total Security is a better-value antivirus buy. If you want it all in one subscription, Norton 360 Deluxe is a more even comparison.

What Bitdefender Total Security Does Not Do Well

VPN is too limited to be useful.

The included Bitdefender VPN caps at 200MB per day per device. That covers one news article session. It does not cover streaming, large file downloads, or any sustained private browsing. Treat the VPN inclusion as absent and budget for a separate VPN subscription if you need one.

No password manager.

Total Security has no built-in password manager. Norton 360 Deluxe and Kaspersky Premium both include password managers at comparable prices. If you are not already using a password manager, factor the cost of a standalone option — Bitwarden free, 1Password at $2.99/month, or Dashlane — into your total security budget.

Anti-theft has limited practical value on modern devices.

Apple's Find My and Google's Find My Device do most of what Bitdefender's anti-theft covers for free, and they do it more reliably. The feature adds the most value on Windows laptops, where a native equivalent does not exist at the same capability level.

Renewal pricing.

The promotional first-year price is significantly lower than the renewal rate. This is standard across the antivirus industry but worth naming clearly. The value case for Bitdefender is strongest in year one. Evaluate the renewal cost before year two begins and compare it against competitors' promotional rates at that point.

Editor's choice: I downloaded the latest version of the best free anti-virus for Windows: Microsoft Windows Defender. While Defender is free and included with Windows 11 and offers sufficiently good security for cautious browsers that don't run into the type of unsafe sites that lead to malware, Bitdefender Total Security provides significantly higher detection rates (99.8% versus Defender's 95-97%), plus Safe Payment browser, webcam security, and even ransomware rollback to make this upgrade on a new Windows PC worth its price.

Bitdefender Total Security vs Malwarebytes Premium

Malwarebytes is a reactive solution - good for cleaning, and less so as a primary protection solution. Bitdefender Total Security covers a wider feature set and has more focused protection capabilities. Use Malwarebytes alongside Bitdefender as a second opinion, or just use Malwarebytes if limited to a single product, but do not run both products as primary protection - they are incompatible.
